Outfit Confidence: What to wear and why

What Colors Photograph Well and What Colors to Avoid

Color plays a major role in the overall mood, style, and feel of your photoshoot. The right color choice can flatter your skin tone, complement the location, and help keep the focus exactly where it should be — on you.

Soft neutrals such as cream, camel, olive, beige, and warm grays always photograph beautifully. They feel timeless, clean, and effortless on camera. Deep jewel tones like emerald, burgundy, navy, and plum also photograph extremely well, adding richness, depth, and elegance to your final images.

Colors to be mindful of include bright neons, tiny busy patterns, and pure stark white in harsh sunlight. Neons can reflect color onto your skin, busy patterns can distract or distort on camera, and bright white can sometimes lose detail in strong light. That does not mean you can never wear them — it simply means they should be styled intentionally.

The exception is brand color. If a bold or signature color is part of your personal brand, business, or creative vision, lean into it. We can always build the look around that color so it feels intentional, polished, and true to you.

“Let your colors flatter you, not fight you.”

How to Match Your Outfit to Your Location

Your outfit should feel like it belongs in the setting without disappearing into it. The goal is to complement the location while still making sure you stand out.

For a clean studio session, solid colors, tailored pieces, and subtle textures photograph beautifully. They create a polished look while keeping the attention on your face, expression, and presence. For outdoor sessions, take inspiration from the environment. Earthy greens, warm browns, creams, and soft tones work beautifully in nature, while structured pieces, darker tones, and sleek styling fit well in urban spaces.

The key is contrast. If your background is filled with greenery, avoid wearing the exact same shade of green unless that is the look we are intentionally creating. If the location is already busy, choose a simpler outfit so the final image feels balanced.

For couples, families, or group sessions, coordination looks better than matching exactly. Choose a shared color palette of two or three colors, then allow each person to wear their own version of that palette. This creates a natural, intentional look without making everyone appear overly uniform.

“Dress with the location, not against it.”

Styling Tips from Santino, Your Creative Director

The best outfit is one that makes you feel confident, comfortable, and like yourself. If you are constantly adjusting, pulling, or second-guessing what you are wearing, it will show in the photos. Fit and comfort matter just as much as style.

Texture and layers can also make a big difference. A knit sweater, structured jacket, soft scarf, blazer, or layered piece can add depth and dimension to your images. Accessories should enhance the look without overpowering it. Think of them as the finishing touch, not the main focus.

Shoes, grooming, and small details matter more than most people realize. Make sure your shoes work with the outfit, your clothes are steamed or pressed, and your pockets are empty. Phones, keys, wallets, and bulky items can interrupt an otherwise clean silhouette.

I always recommend bringing two to three outfit options when possible. This gives us room to create variety, adjust to the location, and choose what photographs best in the moment. When you arrive prepared, comfortable, and confident, the rest of the session flows naturally.

“Confidence is the best thing you’ll wear.”
